The SSh-68 was designed and adopted by the Soviet Army in 1968 as a replacement for the 1940-vintage SSh-40. It looks very similar to the earlier SSh-40 but has a more conical shape. The SSh-68 would remain the primary Russian/Soviet helmet until the early 2000's, and it is still in use in many ex-Soviet republics. Millions have been sold as surplus to civilians worldwide in un-issued condition.
