Coughing is an illness symptom in DayZ. It is a sign of a player contracting either the Influenza or Gas Poisoning. When getting a disease with this symptom, coughing will make a sound that can alert other nearby Survivors and Infected, along with the bottom portion of the screen being momentarily covered by your survivor's hand covering their mouth.
