The Derringer is a handgun in DayZ.

Overview

The Derringer is a two-shot, double-barreled break-action handgun, chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge.

A short-ranged personal defense weapon, the Derringer is best used point blank, as its damage potential decreases significantly with distance. It also lacks a proper set of iron sights, making longer-range shots even more difficult.

A backup option in all but name, the Derringer is a disposable, high-power hand cannon, intended to be discarded as soon as a better firearm becomes available.

One advantage of the Derringer is its tiny inventory profile, at only 2 slots, thus making it a good surprise weapon against a sloppy assailant.

The Derringer has no attachment compatibility.

Notes

The Derringer’s intended purpose in-game aligns heavily with the specification of the FP-45 Liberator disposable pistol, which was airdropped into Axis-occupied territories by the Allies during World War II.

The concept of the Liberator was a small, concealable firearm, used to incapacitate or kill an enemy soldier, and steal his service firearm, usually a rifle.

Trivia

• In real life the Derringer is a generic term for any small and easily concealed pistol i.e. 'pocket pistol'. The derringer pistol earned it's fame and infamy as being the weapon of choice for gamblers or other men of ill repute, as a woman's personal protection piece stuck in a stocking, but most famously as the weapon of choice for assassin John Wilkes Boothe, who used a .44 caliber muzzleloading percussion derringer to kill President Abraham Lincoln in Ford's Theatre during a play.[1]
• The term Derringer is actually a common misspelling, the orginal term for derringer only had two r’s. Following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, newspapers frequently misspelled derringer with three r’s.
• The Derringer was introduced into the game proper in 0.50 update.
• It most resembles derringers produced by Bond Arms, with it most resembling the Bond Arms Snake Slayer model chambered in .357 Magnum, the same cartridge it uses both in game and real life.
