Energy is a Core Character Stat in DayZ. High Energy and Water levels allow you to regenerate blood faster and avoid starvation. It's also one of the 4 stats that contribute to the survivor's Immune system strength.
Overview[ | ]
Energy is vital for the long-term maintenance of a character. Maintaining a healthy energy intake keeps blood regeneration rates high. A player starts with 600 energy and may hold a maximum of 5000. There are a total of 5 different HUD icons that indicate how much energy your character currently has.
Range | Maximum | Minimum | Starting |
---|---|---|---|
5,000 | 0 | 600 | |
UI Indicator | Energy Amount | Effects | |
3,500 - 5,000 (70 - 100%) |

800 - 3,500 (16 - 70%) |

300 - 800 (6 - 16%) |

0 - 300 (0 - 6%) |
Health damage*: 0.020-0.045 per second 1.2 - 2.7 per minute | ||
0 (0%) |
* The amount of damage varies, because the health is always regenerating simultaneously with it. So the effective damage rate depends on the survivor's blood stat's level.
Losing Energy[ | ]
As in real life, energy is constantly required due to a character's metabolic system. Therefore, similar to Water, it is one of the few character stats that will not remain constant.
Player Actions[ | ]
Lost through varying degrees of exertion, a Survivor's energy levels are affected by their activeness, as seen below.
Player Action | Energy Loss* per second |
Energy Loss* per minute |
---|---|---|
Idle | 0.01 - 0.02 | 0.60 - 1.20 |
Walking | 0.10 - 0.20 | 6.00 - 12.00 |
Jogging | 0.30 - 0.60 | 18.00 - 36.00 |
Sprinting | 0.60 - 1.20 | 36.00 - 72.00 |
* The loss rate depends on the current energy level of the Survivor. At 100% energy level, loss is the highest, and at >0%, the lowest. Meaning that you expend twice as much calories when you're full, compared to being just above zero energy.
Conditions[ | ]
Main Article: Illness & Disease
Diseases and illnesses can provoke additional energy drain through vomiting.
Temperature[ | ]

When experiencing cold body temperatures, one's energy levels are constantly depleted in addition to the base drain rates.

Effects[ | ]
Starvation[ | ]
Starvation occurs as a result of a low energy level. At less than 300 energy, the Health stat starts dropping. This continues until the character dies of starvation or replenishes their energy above this threshold.
Blood regeneration[ | ]
Main Article: Blood
A Survivor's energy level affects how quickly they can regenerate lost blood. The water and energy levels act as multipliers to a final blood recovery rate as seen below.
Blood Regen* per second |
Blood Regen* per minute |
Water | Energy |
---|---|---|---|
N/A | N/A | < 300 | Any |
0.075 | 4.5 | 300 - 599 | 200 - 399 |
0.150 | 9 | 300 - 599 | 600+ |
0.150 | 9 | 600+ | 200-399 |
0.300 | 18 | 600+ | 600+ |
* Values are approximate and depend on several factors.
Recovery[ | ]
The survivor can replenish their Energy by eating food and drinking soda cans.
