The Hand Saw is a type of tool in DayZ.
Overview[]
The Hand Saw, like the Hacksaw, can be used to gather Planks, either from Lumber Piles available throughout the map, or by cutting up Wooden Logs.
As a bladed item, it can also be used to release a player from restraints, such as Duct Tape, Rope or Handcuffs.
It is analogous to the Hacksaw in the above functions, although it cannot be used on firearms to create their sawed-off variants.
It also takes up two more slots in a player's inventory - 10 slots, as opposed to 8 that are taken up by the Hacksaw. Both items can be repaired using Sharpening Stones.
A variant of the saw is a necessary item for any Base Building, due to the need for planks, and they cannot be gathered, from any source, without one.
Usage[]
Both variants of the saw (i.e. Hand Saw & Hacksaw) have the same durability when harvesting planks. Each durability 'tier' encompasses two uses, then the third use will knock it down into a lower tier.
Example: A Pristine Handsaw is used to harvest planks from Wooden Logs laying on the ground. The first two logs are cut up without a change in durability. After cutting up the third log, the Handsaw will become Worn. Another three logs are cut up – the saw will now be Damaged. Another three – it will now be Badly Damaged. At that point, the user must take care to only use it two more times – if a third use is made, the saw will become Ruined, and irreparable.
The durability pattern can be simply remembered with the rhyme of Tic-Tac-Toe, for each durability ‘change’.
A Pristine Handsaw can be used a total of 12 times, but it will become Ruined on the 12th use, and so, the practical limit is 11 uses. This is true for both the Handsaw and the Hacksaw.
