Loot refers to items that can be found at loot spawn positions in most enterable buildings in DayZ, such as houses, hospitals, army barracks, and barns. Players can store loot in their inventory, backpacks, tents, and vehicles. Death results in a player's body being lootable, while their backpack remains usable. A player will not keep their items after death, a form of permanent death. Loot is accessed using the gear menu (default G) while under certain conditions, such as when a player faces a loot pile or when a player is positioned in the correct location around a vehicle. Tents are also accessed using the gear menu. |

Loot Spawn Categories
Loot is broken up into 7 main categories in DayZ. in order of rarity these are:
Residential/Civilian
Civilian loot has a bit of everything. Often it has a good chance to spawn Food and small chance to spawn low tier Weapons. A lot of basic Equipment can be found here including the Map and Compass.
Enterable civilian buildings are the most common type of building in DayZ. These include:
- Churches
- Office buildings
- Supermarkets
- Houses
- Apartment buildings
Industrial
Industrial areas are fairly common and they are the main place to look for vehicle components, Wire Fencing Kits and Toolboxes:
Farms
Farm areas can spawn food, drink, and wood, but also have a higher than normal chance to spawn basic weapons and ammunition. These include:
General Military
There are a few military loot areas on the map, and all of them are frequented by both Bandits and Survivors. Military areas spawn the best items currently in DayZ, often high end Equipment. They include:
Barracks
See: Barracks
Barracks are special military areas which may spawn better Weapons and Equipment than the general military areas. Barracks are only found at the International Airfield and are the only place that spawn Satchel Charges.

Helicopter Crash Sites are random, dynamic events in DayZ that can provide highly valuable military loot.
General
There are two types of helicopter wrecks: the American UH-1Y-Venom crashes and the Soviet MI-8 crashes.
The crash sites can be found spawning at predetermined, but randomly chosen, locations throughout the map. The wrecks are typically the source of the highest tier military loot in the game, spawning automatic rifles such as the the AUR AX, M16-A2, LAR, VSS, LE-MAS and DMR.
As of 1.14, a freshly spawned crash site creates a loud explosion that can be heard for several kilometers, making it easier for Survivors in proximity to pinpoint its location; however, crash sites are usually accompanied by military Infected, requiring Survivors to take caution in looting.
History
Legacy (pre-1.0)
In legacy DayZ Standalone, Survivors could come across helicopter crash sites at various places in Chernarus. These crash sites—either a crashed NATO "Black Hawk" helicopter or a Russian MI-8—spawned military-grade loot of varying rarity and provided the chance of finding the legendary M4A1 and its attachments. Furthermore, two different types of helicopter crash sites existed in this version: random crash sites and static (or fixed) crash sites. In both types, loot was only spawned when the server started, making the crash sites and the loot they provided extremely lucrative targets for scavengers and bandits alike.
With update 0.51, Steyr AUG Automatic Rifles and their attachments were brought to "Black Hawk" crash sites. In addition, the model for the "Black Hawk" wreckage was replaced with a UH-1Y crash site model. With update 0.57, the AK101 and 5.56mm Rounds began spawning exclusively at UH-1Y crash sites, and with update 0.59, the FN FAL and the 1911 Engraved began spawning at UH-1Y crash sites.
Random crash sites
When a DayZ server started, three helicopter crash sites would spawn in Chernarus, selected randomly from a pool of pre-determined crash sites across the map. These sites would remain until the server restarted; three new sites would be selected from the pool, new loot would spawn, and the cycle would continue.[1]
Depending on the type of helicopter that crashed, Survivors could find different kinds of loot. MI-8 crashes would spawn Russian loot while "Black Hawk" crashes spawned NATO loot, including the M4A1. "Black Hawk" crash sites spawned more commonly and could be seen much more easily than MI-8 crash sites; a "Black Hawk" crash site would emit a plume of gray-black smoke from its wreckage while an MI-8 crash site would not.
Static crash sites
Three fixed helicopter crash sites in Chernarus. With 0.49, however, they were removed from the game. Prior to the update, they could be found in the following locations:
- (040 130) - in the swamp area south of Balota,
- (134 039) - close to the Rify shipwreck site,
- (083 093) - in the abandoned town of Kumyrna.
Present (post-1.0)
Since 0.49, the three static helicopter crash sites were removed entirely and the possible locations for a crash site to spawn increased to cover most of Chernarus. The NATO "Black Hawk" crash site model was also changed, being replaced entirely with a UH-1Y "Venom" model. As new items were brought to the game, the loot pools for the helicopter crashes were adjusted, and new mechanics like crash sites producing a unique sound effect when spawning and military-geared Infected spawning around the wreckage were added.
With update 1.14, MI-8 crash sites were changed to emit smoke plumes like UH-1Y crash sites.

Trivia
- Before 0.51, crashed helicopter at the random sites appears to be a Sikorsky UH-60 "Black Hawk", or at least a similar model.
- As of 0.51, the western American crashed helicopters seem to be Bell UH-1Y Venom, or at least based on it.

Medical
Medical areas have a large amount of medical supplies. These are the only places where Blood Bags may be found. These include:
- Hospitals
- Medical tents
- Medical boxes at Helicopter crash sites and hospitals
Weapons
Weapons are one of the four primary categories of loot in DayZ. Weapons refers to any wield-able item that a player can use to injure or kill wildlife, the Infected, or even other survivors. Loot also includes ammunition, attachments and magazines used with firearms or other ranged weapons. Most weapons in DayZ are closely modeled after their real-world counterparts and behave as such. There are several types of weapons, organized by their primary combat use.
Melee Weapons
Melee weapons are items or tools that are used in close-range combat. Since just about any usable object can be used as a makeshift weapon in DayZ, items that are listed in this category either have use only as a melee weapon or deal a significant amount of damage, relative to other items, when used as a weapon.
Blade
Blunt
Ranged Weapons
Ranged weapons are weapons that fire a projectile and are used in mid- to long-range combat. Although all ranged weapons require ammunition in order to function. These weapons are typically the most effective.

Ammunition in DayZ refers any item or collection of items that may be used with/in a weapon or firearm, this usually refers to cartridges, projectiles, explosives or anything used in similar nature that may cause damage or injury to one's self or others.
Firearms only accept certain calibers (or sizes) of ammunition. A firearms caliber is determined by the barrel diameter which the firearm is chambered in. Different types of ammunition can be found throughout DayZ, typically inside various buildings and commonly found inside military installations. They may be found as boxed or loose ammunition, or in loaded Magazines.
Individual rounds or shells each have their own item condition (badly damaged, damaged, worn, pristine) and when stacked together, the condition of the stack is essentially an average of those individual rounds. While most stacks found as loot spawns will be of uniform condition, rounds of any condition can be stacked together by players, and it is possible to sort the ammunition by splitting each stack down to individual rounds.

Equipment
Equipment, the largest of the four primary categories of loot in DayZ, refers to any item or tool that can be worn or used for specific purpose. Since equipment covers such a vast array of items, it is easier to define what equipment is not. Equipment does not include items used for who nourishment. Equipment does not cover natural, or manmade resources used for crafting like sticks, large- and small stones, feathers, planks, etc. Finally, equipment does not include items whose primary use is as a weapon. Although weapons are not classified as equipment, a lot of equipment, namely tools, can be used as weapons in DayZ. Being such a large and broad category, equipment is broken down into several smaller categories, which may in turn have their own subcategories, based on the item's primary use.
Base Building
Main Article: Base Building
Base Building equipment refers to a variety of items and tools that are used in the construction and fortification of a survivor camp. A combination of tools, resources and Base Building equipment are needed in order to construct a fortified camp. With or without a fortified camp, survivors can use several items for storage, including things like tents, barrels or chests. There are also several options for adding functionality to a camp: generators, camouflaged netting, construction lights, battery chargers, etc.

Clothing
Main Article: Clothing
Clothing is any equipment or item of apparel that can be worn by a survivor. While the primary purpose of clothing is to protect a survivor from the elements, clothing also importantly provides additional storage space in the form of pockets, pouches or other slots. Clothing can also provide some camouflage for the survivor from the infected or even other survivors.
Communication
Main Article: Communication
Communications equipment are items used for audio communication, either one-way or two-way, with other survivors over long distances. All communications equipment requires a power source in order to operate.
Crafting

Medical
Main Article: Medical Supplies
Medical Supplies refers to mostly consumable items used to assist with injury recovery, alleviate pain, fight disease or as a disinfectant. Some of the most important equipment in the game, having readily available medical supplies can mean the difference between life and death.
Personal Storage
Personal Storage equipment refers to several types of items used to provide a survivor with additional storage space, protective containers or liquid storage. Protective containers can be used to house important items in order to prevent them from becoming damaged should the survivor come under attack. A few of the protective containers can even be buried to create a hidden stash. Liquid containers allow the storage, transportation or consumption of water or gasoline.
