The AK-74 is an assault rifle designed in the early 1970s to replace the AK-47 and AKM rifles in service with the Soviet military. Chambered in the lighter 5.45x39mm, a cartridge introduced to replace the 7.62x39mm of the AK47M rifles, the AK-74 was intended to be more controllable in fully-automatic fire and decrease the weight borne by infantry. It was the standard weapon of the local Chernarussian Defence Forces (CDF) before the outbreak.

The AK-74 is usually considered the weakest Assault Rifle in the game due to it's low damage, high recoil and poor sights. However, like the AK-47M, it is very common and ammunition is plentiful. they are a common sight in coastal cities, where they often spawn in Firestations and Military tents. That said, the AK-74 is still a decent weapon, and far superior to Civilian weapons like the Winchester 1866. It can be found in most military areas, including Helicopter Crash Sites.
In DayZ the report of the AK-74 is quieter than that of the AK47M, but the damage is very significantly lowered. However, The AK-74 can support a number of different attachments, including Grenade Launchers and Silencers, Unlike the AK47M, Which can only support Optics. It is accurate out to around 300m, though it's poor sights make target acquisition difficult at longer ranges.

Ammunition[ | ]
The AK-74 only accepts AK-74 Magazines, and it will NOT accept 75-round RPK-74 mags or AK-47M Magazines.
