The PKM is a Soviet General-Purpose Machinegun designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. It is the most common Machinegun in the world, and was the primary machine gun of the Chernarussian Defense Forces before the outbreak. The PKM was added in the DayZ Mod 1.8.7 Update, and spawns alongside the RPK-74 and RPK at Russian Mil MI-8 Crashsites.
Overview[ | ]
The PKM is a relatively common machine gun, and like the M240, it does 8000 damage per hit. However, the PKM is very long and heavy and suffers from high recoil, and thus, like most general-purpose machine guns, it is best-suited to long-range firefights and ambushes, while the operator is prone and utilizing the Bipod. The effective range is around 800m.
Like all light machine guns, the PKM is equipped with a bipod, which drastically reduces recoil while prone. However, when standing up or kneeling, the PKM is nearly uncontrollable, so it is advised to fire it in short bursts of 2-5 rounds. When prone, fire long bursts at the target until it drops.
The PKM fires the same 7.62x54mm round as the SVD, and thus has a much longer range and is far harder hitting than the M249 SAW. Capable of killing a player in two shots, the PKM is extremely effective against players and vehicles alike at the medium-to-long-range.
Like other 7.62mm weapons, the PKM is extremely loud, so it is ill-advised to use the weapon near large numbers of zombies.
Ammunition[ | ]
The PKM accepts only 100rnd PKM Belts as ammunition, which is usually only found with the weapon. It cannot accept any attachments, But like all machineguns, it has a built-in Bipod that supports the weapon only while prone.
Trivia[ | ]
- The PKM is the same weapon mounted on the Pickup PKM, and the modified PKB version could also be found mounted on the Mi-17 before it was removed from the game.
- While the PKM was only added in the 1.8.7 update, ammunition for it had been in the game since the 1.8.1 patch, as it was used to reload the Mi-17's PKB machine-guns.
