As of 1.0, the Splitting Axe has surpassed its brother, the Firefighter Axe, in terms of damage and is second only to the Pickaxe. Equal in range to both, the Splitting Axe is a deadly melee weapon. In addition to having all of the same functionality the Firefighter Axe provides, the Splitting Axe boasts more durability in its role as a tool. With its improved damage and versatility, the Splitting Axe is a contender for the best melee weapon in the game.
