Selective-fire integrally suppressed marksmen rifle, fed from a detachable magazine. Compatible with KA scopes. Uses 9x39mm rounds. — In-game description
The VSS is a late game integrally-suppressed select-fire marksman rifle, it is only obtainable from Helicopter Crash Sites or other survivors that have the VSS on them. With the benefit of being integrally suppressed and firing sub-sonic 9x39mm and 9x39mm AP cartridges, making this rifle alongside its counterpart the SVAL the most quiet rifles in the game. Due to the sub-sonic 9x39mm ammo, the SVAL is only audible up to 200m and there will also be no bullet crack (from the bullet going super-sonic) when you're shooting at other survivors. The rifle is best suited for ranges up to 150m, but you can extend the range when you equip the ATOG Scope. The iron-sights zeroing is fixed at 160m and are canted to the left side of the rifle, they're also quite big and it blocks quite a bit of you're peripheral view to the right when aiming. With the ability to equip all Russian Optics, it has access to the Kobra, P1-87-L, PSO-1/PSO-1-1 and 1PN51 NVG sights. With the access to the 1PN51 NVG optic, it makes the VSS suitable for night time gunfights. The VSS and its counterpart can be fed using 10rd VSS Mags or the 20rd SVAL Mags, but can also be chambered by using a single 9x39mm or 9x39mm AP round. With the 20rd SVAL Mag you can be more aggressive and push survivors in CQB, making room clearing and pushing corridors far more reliable. Although this is not recommended with the 10rd VSS Mag, as you lose 10 bullets and would be more suitable for a more slower paced, long range playstyle. The 9x39mm/9x39mm AP rounds that the VSS uses, are extremely hard to find and with the downside of having a slow bullet travel speed. The target leading you have to do is also higher than most other weapon in the game, the upside is that the bullets do high damage on survivors. With both bullets doing 73 health damage on a unarmored survivor, the 9x39mm AP also does the same damage on survivors equipped with the Plate Carrier and all other sorts of armor. Meaning you can 3-shot a survivor wearing a Plate-Carrier (the Plate Carrier absorbs 75% of the damage done to it), with the 9x39mm AP rounds effectively up to 600m (Note that the bullet will take around 4-6 seconds to hit its target at such ranges). Both rounds do 73 shock damage as well, meaning you can 2 shot knock out any survivor equipped with any type of armor.
Weapon attachments are any accessories or devices that attach to a firearm in order to add, improve or modify the weapon's functionality or performance. In DayZ Standalone these attachments take the form of sights/optics, handguards, buttstocks, muzzle devices, barrel and handguard attachments and gun wraps.
Sights and Optics
- The VSS is based on the real-life VSS Vintorez.
- The VSS (GRAU designation 6P29) is an integrally-suppressed select-fire sniper rifle, developed in the Soviet Union during the mid eighties and approved for service in 1987. It fires the 9x39mm subsonic SP-5 and 9x39mm armor-piercing SP-6 cartridges and can be fed using the 10rd VSS magazine or the 20rd AS VAL magazine.
